Coding with Music on Code.org
Our second-grade students recently began to explored the connection between music and computer science through our Coding with Music unit. Using engaging, hands-on activities, students developed foundational coding skills while learning how technology and creativity work together.
Throughout the unit, students practiced sequencing by arranging code blocks in the correct order, much like a songwriter organizes lyrics and notes to create a composition. They also explored functions, recognizing how reusable patterns in code are similar to the repeated beats and rhythms found in music. Finally, students were introduced to event-driven programming, creating projects in which sounds responded to specific actions or inputs.
This interdisciplinary learning experience strengthened students' problem-solving and computational thinking skills while demonstrating that coding can be both creative and meaningful. By connecting computer science concepts to music, students gained a deeper understanding of how technology is used to create, innovate, and communicate in the world around them.
