Quarter Notes, Eighth Notes, and Quarter Rests!

We have been having a blast in Kindergarten learning about quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rest! These smarty pants can read, say, play, and create their own rhythms. We ended our unit with a favorite by creating each note and rest with play dough! I could not be prouder of them!

When our kindergarteners read quarter notes, quarter rests, and eighth note rhythms, they develop foundational music skills such as recognizing rhythmic symbols, understanding steady beat, and distinguishing between sound and silence. This process also strengthens early math and literacy skills by building counting, pattern recognition, sequencing, and symbol-to-action connections. As students clap, tap, or move to rhythms, they improve listening focus, memory, and motor coordination while learning to start and stop together. Additionally, practicing rhythms supports social-emotional growth by encouraging self-control, confidence, and cooperation in a group setting.
