A First Look at the Future: SJDS 8th Graders Visit Local High Schools
By Lori Altenbaumer, 7th/8th Math & Science
This month, our 8th grade students from St. James Day School took an exciting and meaningful step toward their future as they visited Texas High School (THS) and Pleasant Grove High School (PGHS). These visits mark the beginning of an important decision-making process as our students prepare to enter high school as 9th graders for the 2026–27 school year and ultimately become the Graduating Class of 2030.
Texas High School (THS)
Our first stop was Texas High School, where students had the opportunity to tour the school’s new, state-of-the-art Career and Technical Education (CTE) building. During the visit, students learned about the wide range of hands-on training and career readiness programs available to THS students. Many were especially intrigued to discover that, in some cases, students can graduate high school with an assistance license, such as becoming a dental assistant, giving them a head start on career pathways straight out of high school. The emphasis on real-world skills and practical learning made a strong impression on our group.
Pleasant Grove High School (PGHS)
Our visit to Pleasant Grove High School began with an energetic welcome from the cheerleaders, Showstoppers dance team, and the school band, immediately setting an exciting tone for the day. As we toured the campus, students were able to see the day-to-day life of a PGHS student, both inside and outside the classroom. Along the way, we met office personnel and current high school students who were eager to answer questions about clubs, activities, and academic programs offered at PGHS, giving our students valuable insight into school culture and student life.
Student-Led Perspectives & Big Decisions Ahead
At both schools, our SJDS students were guided by current high school students, which provided an authentic and relatable perspective. Hearing directly from students who are already navigating high school helped make the experience even more meaningful.
Choosing a high school is a big decision, and these visits are just the first step in helping our 8th graders begin to narrow down which school might be the best fit for them after they leave St. James. The transition to high school is always a significant milestone, and while we will certainly miss this amazing group of students when they move on, we are proud to support them every step of the way. Our goal is to help them feel confident, informed, and excited as they prepare for the next chapter of their educational journey.
Once a Spartan, always a Spartan—and we can’t wait to see all the incredible things the Class of 2030 will accomplish!
