Our St. James Day School 8th grade class recently returned from an unforgettable trip to Washington, DC - one filled with powerful moments, meaningful learning, and memories that will last a lifetime. From the very first day, our students embraced the opportunity to step outside the classroom and experience history, government, and patriotism in a deeply personal way.
Inside Our Nation’s Leadership
One of the highlights of the trip was touring both the United States Capitol and the Pentagon. Walking through these iconic buildings gave students a firsthand look at where some of the most important decisions in our country are made. It was a powerful experience to stand in spaces they’ve seen only in pictures and see the inner workings of our government and military up close.
Honoring History Through Memorials
Throughout the trip, students visited several of our nation’s most significant memorials, including the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, World War 2 Memorial, and the Washington Monument. Each stop provided a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many and to connect emotionally with the stories behind these historic sites.
Discovering the Smithsonian Museums
Another major highlight was exploring several of the incredible Smithsonian museums, including the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of the American Indian, and the National Museum of American History.
From seeing historic aircraft and space exploration artifacts to walking among dinosaur fossils and learning about the rich cultures and histories that shape our nation, students were immersed in hands-on learning at every stop. These museums offered something for everyone and sparked curiosity across a wide range of interests.
An Evening on the Potomac
One of the most fun and memorable moments of the trip was our dinner cruise along the Potomac River. As the sun set and the city lights began to shine, students enjoyed a delicious meal, music, and time together outside of the busy schedule of touring.
Moments That Left a Lasting Impact
Some of the most poignant and moving experiences came from visiting the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Pentagon Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery.
At Arlington, students had the incredible opportunity to witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - a solemn and powerful ceremony that left us in quiet reflection. These moments reminded us all of the cost of freedom and the importance of remembering and honoring those who have served and sacrificed.
A Privilege and a Blessing
“Peace out” Washington, DC!
Trips like this are more than just travel - they are transformative learning experiences. We are incredibly privileged and blessed as a school community to provide opportunities like this for our students. The lessons learned in Washington, DC go far beyond what can be taught in a classroom. They shape perspectives, deepen understanding, and inspire gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy.
Our students represented St. James with excellence, curiosity, and respect throughout our trip. We are so proud of them and grateful for the lasting impact this experience will have on their lives for years to come!
