Mrs. Moore, P.E. did an all day engineering workshop with the 4th and 5th graders. We are very fortunate to have such outstanding volunteers. After teaching us a lot about engineering, she gave us some tasks to put our new skills and knowledge to use. One of the assignments was to design a table using just eight pieces of newspaper. The specifications were, it needed to be at least eight inches high and be able to hold a heavy book. Some of the 5th graders achieved the goal during the workshop. The day after the workshop, the 4th graders reviewed what they had learned and revised their designs. This time, all three groups were able to make successful tables.
We learned great words like: specifications and implode. One extension that we were given and worked on at a later date, was to work with a time limit. Students were to use marshmallows and spaghetti to see who could achieve the tallest tower in fifteen minutes. We were much better at planning and using the information we had after our workshop with Mrs. Moore.
